Urban Pairs

Urban wandering and real-time recording of spontaneous every-day – at first glance, perhaps insignificant – public moments, are the essence and philosophy of street photography. In the "Urban Pairs" collection the images are presented in pairs in order to conceptually converse. At the same time, moving a step further from conversation to storytelling, they aspire to demonstrate how people and the urban landscape harmonize and interact. A landscape that man has created and which - sometimes consciously and sometimes unconsciously – man continues to shape. Reminding posters on building walls, the simple, common photochemical prints (c-prints) are mounted on cheap industrial material (polystyrene) and with the perforated metal backing frames and the rough stone on the walls of the exhibition hall they make up an aesthetic effect that emanates the "smell" and emits the "rumble" of the streets of the city. Until the mid-1950s, at a time when photography was considered by the public, as opposed to what it is today, inaccessible and rare, framing and finishing a photograph was considered utterly distasteful and "fake". The approach was completely simplistic and minimalist. The photographs presented to the public were printed exclusively photochemically in the darkroom and were mounted simply (usually with pins) on a suitable surface. Moreover, big size prints were extremely difficult to make technically, and they were rare and very expensive. The presentation of this exhibition is inspired by that time and by that philosophy of presenting photographs. It is an attempt to get back to the basics, forcing the viewer to approach the image, observe it in detail, and focus exclusively on the content. In the spirit of this generally clean-cut, austere and minimalist approach, the use of the English language for the captions of the photo pairs more effectively serves the concise approach to the concepts.

Yannis Economou

Born in 1968. He systematically engages in photography since 2013. Since 2015 he photographs exclusively analogically. He was honoured with an honorable mention at the SONY World Photography Competition in 2015. In March 2016 his solo exhibition is hosted at “Gallery 7” in Athens, where the street photography collection “Summer in the city” was presented. The 16 monotypes of the collection were acquired by the "Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete" and incorporated into its permanent collection. Later on, in the summer of 2017, they were exhibited as part of the exhibition "Ten Chapters - Works from the Permanent Collection", supervised by Maria Marangou. From October 2016 to May 2018 he has collaborated with the broadsheet newspaper “Athens Voice” through the regular social photo reportage column “Roads of the World”.
“Urban Pairs” is his second solo exhibition.
