Levan Akin’s "And then we danced"

Sweden's official Oscar submission for Best International Film 2020

Merab, since he was very young, has been dancing at the National Academy of Dance, and together with his partner Mary, they are very close to taking the coveted position in the National Dance Team. But everything is turned upside down when the charismatic and quirky Hercules enters their lives. Merab's desires will push him to challenge his conservative social environment, and risk everything.

A film about the clash of tradition with modern beliefs, about defying social norms, using love for the art of dance as a vehicle.

Director's note:
“For me, this film is a love letter to culture and tradition. I wanted to show that there is no contradiction in loving your heritage, being part of your culture and breaking norms at the same time. That was the main issue for me. But I also wanted to explore how a great showdown can make you brave and free. That is why I needed a dancer for the film to focus on the dance side of the subject. In that sense, the main character was a critical factor in the film, and I was very lucky to find him. He has a very expressive face. He can change emotions so rapidly: many things happen when you observe him. It arouses your curiosity as a spectator. Sometimes he looks old, and sometimes he looks young. It is as if he has 50.000 faces. The best acting is the one that seems effortless - and yet it is very difficult to reach that point, especially when you have a large camera stuck to your face. He is really talented."
